During a recent conversation with a local aesthetician, she said to me, “my clients want the heavy hitters, like peptides”; it occured to me in that moment that people don’t even really know what that means…
A peptide is a chain of 2 or more amino acids and they are considered the building blocks of proteins. There are literally hundreds of different peptide varieties, all made of different combinations of amino acids but in the skin we find some common ones that you have probably heard of; namely collagen, elastin and keratin. These peptides are chiefly responsible for the skin’s texture and tone.
In skincare products, peptides will typically function as skin rejuvenating ingredients, nourishing the proteins that are naturally occurring in the skin. (Production of these proteins starts to diminish as we age.) There are several types of peptides that also may be used for smoothing, improving the skin’s barrier repair function and aiding hydration and firmness. On skincare product labels look for ingredients that end in “peptide” – many also begin with the word “palmitoyl”. One such powerhouse is Palmitoyl oligopeptide, find it in our Peptide Plumping Eye Creme.
With the potential to reinforce healthy skin and promote smoothness, peptides are a key ingredient to any anti-aging product. You may even find a combination of several different peptides in the same product, thus offering multiple different benefits. But keep in mind, peptides aren’t for everyone. Some sensitive skinned individuals may become irritated when using products that contain certain peptides. Additionally, you have to be conscientious of how you use and store products that contain them, keeping them away from direct sunlight and extremes of temperature. (The same is true of natural skin care products as well.) Lastly, products that contain peptides will come with a heftier price tag then alternative skin care products that do not contain these active ingredients. Here at Theoderma Skin Care, we use the highest quality peptides and botanicals to bring you natural, vegan products with exceptional results.
